Power Law and Entropy

چکیده
Shannon[1] and Yavuz[2] estimated the entropy of real documents. This note drives an upper bound of entropy from the power law. Let D be a set of documents and f r(w) be the number of occurrences of a word w in the document. Given an interger k, we denote by F (k) the number of words whose frequency is k, i.e., F (k) = ♯{w ∈ D | f r(w) = k}. The entropy of the document set D is defined by E(D) = Σ w∈D p(w)log(p(w)), where p(w) = f r(w)/N and N = Σ w∈D f r(w).

Slip Velocity in Flow and Heat Transfer of Non-newtonian Fluids in Microchannels
The steady-state fully-developed laminar flow of non-Newtonian power-law fluids is examined in a circular microchannel with slip boundary condition and under an imposed constant wall heat flux. Effects of slip as well as the hydrodynamic and thermal key parameters on heat transfer and entropy generation are investigated. The results reveal that increasing the Brinkman number and the flow behavi...
متن کاملNumerical Study of the Magnetic Field Effects on the Heat Transfer and Entropy Generation Aspects of a Power Law Fluid over an Axisymmetric Stretching Plate Structure
Numerical investigation of the effects of magnetic field strength, thermal radiation, Joule heating, and viscous heating on a forced convective flow of a non-Newtonian, incompressible power law fluid in an axisymmetric stretching sheet with variable temperature wall is accomplished. The power law shear thinning viscosity-shear rate model for the anisotropic solutions and the Rosseland approxima...
متن کاملDetermination of the Real Loss of Power for a Condensing and a Backpressure Turbine by Means of Second Law Analysis
All real processes generate entropy and the power/exergy loss is usually determined by means of the Gouy-Stodola law. If the system only exchanges heat at the environmental temperature, the Gouy-Stodola law gives the correct loss of power. However, most industrial processes exchange heat at higher or lower temperatures than the actual environmental temperature. When calculating the real loss of...
متن کاملDerivation of 2D Power-Law Velocity Distribution Using Entropy Theory
The one-dimensional (1D) power law velocity distribution, commonly used for computing velocities in open channel flow, has been derived empirically. However, a multitude of problems, such as scour around bridge piers, cutoffs and diversions, pollutant dispersion, and so on, require the velocity distribution in two dimensions. This paper employs the Shannon entropy theory for deriving the power ...
متن کاملSparse Maximum-Entropy Random Graphs with a Given Power-Law Degree Distribution
Even though power-law or close-to-power-law degree distributions are ubiquitously observed in a great variety of large real networks, the mathematically satisfactory treatment of random power-law graphs satisfying basic statistical requirements of realism is still lacking. These requirements are: sparsity, exchangeability, projectivity, and unbiasedness. The last requirement states that entropy...
متن کاملThe Second Law: From Carnot to Thomson-Clausius, to the Theory of Exergy, and to the Entropy-Growth Potential Principle
At its origins, thermodynamics was the study of heat and engines. Carnot transformed it into a scientific discipline by explaining engine power in terms of transfer of “caloric”. That idea became the second law of thermodynamics when Thomson and Clausius reconciled Carnot’s theory with Joule’s conflicting thesis that power was derived from the consumption of heat, which was determined to be a f...
